森山 明子　

デザインジャーナリスト／武蔵野美術大学教授
一九五三年新潟県生まれ。一九七五年東京芸術大学美術学部芸術学科卒業。特許庁意匠課審査官、国際デザイン交流協会勤務を経て、一九八六年日経マグロウヒル社（現・日経BP社）入社。「日経デザイン」の創刊にかかわり、一九九三―九八年同誌編集長。一九九八年から現職、デザイン情報学科所属。NHKハート展詩選考委員、グッドデザイン賞審査副委員長、芸術工学会副会長・理事、公益財団法人の三宅一生デザイン文化財団理事、日本デザイン振興会評議員などをつとめる。単著は『まっしぐらの花――中川幸夫』（美術出版社、二○○五年）、『石元泰博――写真という思考』（武蔵野美術大学出版局、二○一○年）、『新井淳一――布・万華鏡』（美学出版、二○一二年）。 ＞ Link

Akiko Moriyama

Design Journalist
Professor, Musashino Art University
Graduated 1975 from the Art Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
Joined Nikkei McGraw-Hill, Inc. (currently Nikkei Business Publications, Inc.) in 1986 after working as a design patent examiner at the Japan Patent Office and the Japan Design Foundation. Was involved in launching the magazine Nikkei Design, and served as its editor in chief from 1993 to 1998. Since 1998, has been a professor in the Department of Design Informatics at Musashino Art University.
Author of Yukio Nakagawa: An Artist Who Devoted His Life to Flowers, Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Beyond the Eye that Shapes and Junichi Arai: The Dream Weaver. Served as supervisor and co-author for The Concise History of Japanese Modern Design and Complete Collection of the G-Mark System.

Design Journalism:

Coverage and Resonance, from 1987 to 2015

This book is not a discussion of design journalism, but an actual record of its practice by the author. The book is given the subtitle “Coverage and Resonance” for a reason. The task of design journalism involves coverage and careful analysis of the subject. We could go so far as to say that an article is a fruit borne from the resonance between a subject and a journalist. Examining the words spoken by the person concerned, a journalist probes into the personʼs subconscious and tries to clarify the hidden meaning of the personʼs works and events—this is what the author means by “resonance.”

Part I, Design History, contains 11 short biographies which were first published in Nikkei Design and later collected in the book Design of Showa (Pioneers) (Nikkei Business Publication Inc.) published in 1995. Part II, Design Journalism, covers various styles of articles that capture diverse aspects of the times, including conversations, transcripts of lectures, and interviews. As in Part II, Part III also contains articles of various styles, and in this section, the authorʼs aim is to select topics that deal with “Design Culture” and connect them with issues concerning the establishment of a design museum. Part IV, Design/ Art/ Spirits, will include pieces on ikebana, photographs, paintings, and poetry.

According to the author, design is a complete affirmation of the positivity of humanity. In that sense, design is different from technology, which is neutral, and also different from art, which is often inspired by negation. This book is compiled of 80 pieces of writing selected from the authorʼs kaleidoscopic writing career over the past 28 years. In these writings readers will discover the correlation between the ever-changing realm of design and the unchangeable sphere of the human mind.
